Talking to Your Doctor about Your Pain

As a patient, you can help your doctor determine the best course of therapy for your specific condition by providing him/her with the following information:

  • The severity of your pain: mild, moderate or severe?
  • The location of your pain? Do you feel pain in more than one location?
  • The length of time that you have experienced your pain. Have you experienced this type of pain in the past?
  • A list of medications (both Rx and OTC) or supplements that you are currently taking
  • A description of what you’ve done to relieve your pain: physical therapy, medication, other?
  • A description of your pain. Is your pain sharp and stabbing, dull and aching or burning like an electric shock?
